Colter Bay

Colter Bay

Colter Bay sits at the northern edge of Grand Teton National Park. It is on Lake Jackson, and offers great views of Mount Moran. Like most of the park, there is abundant animal life in and around Colter Bay. There are also several hiking trails, and lots of recreational opportunities.

A brutally cold, but calm and foggy late spring morning created a glorious scene. As the sun came up I was hoping to catch some of the alpenglow on the Tetons. The fog just refused to cooperate. But, if there is one thing I have learned from photography, it is patience. I gave it some time, and sure enough the fog shifted, every so slightly to give me a glimpse of the Tetons basking in the sun. It wasn’t what I had originally planned, but I really liked the mystery and drama the fog created, as if Nature was only willing to show some of it’s beauty that day, leaving the rest up to my imagination.

Hide and Seek, Part 2

Take at nearly the same time as the image above, I thought a panorama of the scene really did it justice. The fog, thick and rolling around, shows just barely a bit of the mountains towards the the right of the frame creating an even more impending sense of the scale of the Tetons.

Animal Crossing

One morning as I was on my way back from taking in the Colter Bay sunrise, I happened across a couple of juvenile Grizzly Bears having their breakfast. This was a first for me, both seeing a Grizzly in the wild, and capturing one on camera. Safely away using my 600mm telephoto lens I watched them for at least 30 minutes, and this one of the bear crossing the road, almost as if he knew everyone would stop and wait, was one of my favorite photos from that stolen moment.

Lesson Learned

One of the juvenile bears I came across that morning had recently had an encounter with another animal indigenous to the park, a porcupine. I can’t imagine how painful the quills were for the poor bear. The ranger seemed to think that while painful, and sometimes very dangerous, this little guy would be able to recover fine as the quills fell out.
